in just me

Our camera broke.  Believe you me, I am singing no funeral dirge over this one.  I’ve had it for three years and strongly disliked it for two-and-a-half.  That thing took terrible pictures.

Instead of buying a new camera I’d love to upgrade my basic phone to a smartphone.  Leaving the house with my phone, camera and music in a single contraption would be much handier than the three devices of phone, camera and iPod I carry around now.

But in order to get a phone with a nice camera I would need a smartphone.  Verizon does not allow smartphones without data plans, and I’m highly resistant to paying for the data plan.  The internet and I are too intertwined as it is and I don’t need it following me around, tempting me with email-checking and Facebook-checking and miscellaneous-blog-checking while I’m out and about.  Especially not for an extra $30 a month.

Hubby deserves the data plan.  Thirty dollars a month for him to listen to Pandora eight hours a day, six days a week at work is fine.  It’s just not worth it for me.

I KNOW that I’m complaining about something only a spoiled girl could complain about.  But I see the option dancing in front of me like a vapor, then Verizon laughingly wipes it away.  It’s rude of them.  Like a spoiled girl I will blame someone else for my troubles.

Do you people with smartphones really truly love them?  I mean LOVE love them.  We can upgrade Hubby’s line now and get the smartphone with the camera if it’d really, truly be awesome.  I feel a bit of a rush on this because my kids are super cute and I don’t want to miss pictures of them, especially with the first day of school coming up.

We caved a year and a half ago and gave in to the smart phone hype…first me and a few months later (after constantly using mine to check email, radar and markets) my hubby. Are they necessary? No. Do I love mine? YES! I often feel guilty and no I don’t really ‘need’ one, but I do love it anyway! :)

But I feel you might need one more than me, Nellie. You have kids to keep track of, and I can definitely see why your husband needs one to check the weather and markets. With me I feel it would just be an indulgence.

As you know I am a huge fan of Verizon. However, AT & T has the iPhone 3′s for unbelievable cheap. Brand loyalty can get thrown to the curb for a few hundred dollars…

I Love my Droid (Verizion), however sometimes I feel it is smarter than me! :) It has been great to not only keep track of the kiddos but most of the pictures I take are using my smart phone, also I can blog from it! ;) Weather updates, traveling/navigation. The perks for me far outweigh the cost of the data plan.

I love mine too!! And I do mean love!! It is completely not necessary but im on it so much we have been considering getting rid of our wifi at home. I have the droidx and it has a great camera. I haven’t loaded my videos on my computer yet to test their quality though.

Per my facebook status, the droidx is also VERY resilient. I have dropped mine in the bathtub with water and now had it run over and it still works!

Yeah, that is incredible. I’m still gobsmacked by all it has handled.

Ask Todd about his Droid experiences.

We switched to Sprint almost 2 years ago so I could get a smartphone without the extra data package. It is $79.99 a month for unlimited data, texts and mobile to mobile calls. I LOVE my blackberry. Could I live without it? Yes, but being on the go, it definitely comes in super handy. I know that some people have heard bad things about Sprint’s customer service, but I recently read an article that Sprint was actually rated #1 in customer service. Our coverage while traveling to Hays might be little less than what we had with Verizon, but saving $30 a month is totally worth it. I’ve had no complaints! Good luck deciding!!!!

Erin, that’s interesting about their customer service record! I know you and I had a conversation once about Sprint having the worst customer service of any national company, wireless provider or not, so it’s good to hear they’ve turned themselves around. The only problem is that if I switch to Sprint I’ll have to wait until March when my contract is up. And I really don’t like to wait :) .
