The difficult part of watching Friday Night Lights now, after the final season has already wrapped, is that none of you are watching it with me. Some of you–Hayley and Todd and Big Mama–have watched it from the beginning and are in the midst of mourning life without Coach Taylor and Tami and Matt Saracen and TimRiggins!, but I am only in the second season and I need somebody to talk about it with. Bear with me cuz I’m talking about it here.
- Hayley warned me the second season is the nadir of our beloved show. And how right she is. Tami Taylor calling Julie a brat? No, wouldn’t have happened in season 1. I get that she’s post-partum and a bit hormonal, but she wouldn’t have called Julie a brat. Connie Britton obviously had a tough time spitting out the words that were so unlike her character.
- Conversely, when Tami Taylor ran from her house, robe billowing behind her, to yank Julie out of The Swede’s car: awesomeness.
- I’m glad Landry’s Killing Spree is finished. But nobody in the town got wind of this? That one of their cop’s kids bludgeoned a man to death? Unlikely.
- Poor Jason Street. That kid is not the best actor, and then the writers give him an awful speech outside TimRiggins!’s door. You could see the embarrassment on his face.
- We’ve had less Lyla Garrity and that’s a good thing. But her acting is improving and I was happy to see Logan appear last night.
- Weren’t some people supposed to have graduated last year? Don’t let this turn into Beverly Hills 90210 where they’re in high school for a good seven years.
The good stuff:
- I love that Buddy Garrity sweats like a dog when he’s outside. Keeps it real. Same with Coach Taylor’s hair. His hair is always a mess.
- Also what keeps it real? Everybody’s house. Nobody has anything fancy. The producers found some real people’s homes and set up shop inside.
- Coach Taylor slamming Larabie’s coach against the wall to protect one of his own.
- TimRiggins! is a class act.
- The acting from Coach Taylor, Tami Taylor, Matt Saracen, LANDRY, TimRiggins!, Smash Williams, Smash’s Mama Corrina… I’m sure there are more I’m forgetting. Friday Night Lights has a strong cast of actors.
So now all of you go download the show off Netflix and we’ll discuss. Go now.
