G eats a school lunch almost every day. I love it. I loved it even more when I thought my friend Shannon’s husband was still running the show and planning super-healthy meals for our kids, but now that he’s gone I worry G’s lunches are not all that healthy. Which is a shame, but not enough of a shame for me to make his lunch every morning. Because it wouldn’t only be making his lunch, but it would also be making sure I had ingredients and interesting foods on hand for him to take. Usually we don’t even have juice boxes in the house.
So anyway, I used to check his account pretty frequently. I’d put it on my wall calendar, on the calendar on my phone, and make sure he always had enough money to not get turned away at the register and get stuck eating cereal for lunch. But then one day he came home with a note that let me know his balance was low and I needed to refill it. Relying on the lunch ladies, I stopped checking his balance.
Friday morning I got a call from his school. The super nice lunch lady let me know that he was out of money, had been out of money the day before, too, so she’d put money on there and could I please send $3.25 to school on Monday with him.
I am so grateful for ladies who don’t let my son go hungry when I forget to make sure he’ll be fed.

Much nicer than our lunch lady, who left me a mean phone call about how if I don’t send money the next day, my daughter will not be eating. I guess they give them cereal or peanut butter and jelly or something. Anyway, I had already taken money to the office that day, so lunch lady if you’re reading. Check in the office before you leave me a mean message!
Let me assure you, Lincoln is the ONLY school with a nice lunch lady!!! She rocks!
