Dear G,
Today you are six.
Last night at dinner I told you it was your last day ever being five. You slapped the table and yelled “Wahoo!” When I turned six my favorite uncle told me I’d never be five again and I cried. You handled the news much better than I did.
Then this morning when I told you “Happy birthday!” you excitedly demonstrated how you can no longer show your age to people with just one hand. The excitement of being six!
Back in Tulsa when I worked as a hairstylist I commented to one of my clients that some experts in an article I’d recently read stated that your work as a parent is done when your child reaches the age of 9; after that it’s all maintenance. My client laughed and said “It’s six! You can do no more after they’re six years old.”
Well, today you’re six, and if that client of mine was right, then I’m perfectly happy to let you continue to be the boy and man you’re turning in to.
Keep loving on Baby Chickadee.
Keep playing with Little Missy and sharing your best toys with her. Keep laughing with her as you guys go to bed at night.
Keep thinking your Daddy and I know everything.
Keep listening to your teachers and working hard at every assignment in class. You’re a phenomenal student.
Keep choosing to surround yourself with the friends you’ve picked. They’re wonderful boys, too, and I can envision the men they’ll be. Those are going to be some great friendships.
Above all, continue to love Jesus and ponder His truths. He will hold your hand and guide you through anything this world throws at you.
I love you, my precious and admirable G.
