Hayley told me that she saw Jamie Lee Curtis on some TV show wherein JLC said that you should look at your closet and act like you’re packing for a two-week vacation (apparently Ms. Curtis is way into organization. who knew?). Anything that you wouldn’t bring with you, toss.
Last night I tried it. I pulled out five or so items at a time and sorted them into Definitely No, Maybe?, Too Small (for now!)/Off Season and Yes. Then I packed away the Too Small (for now!)/Off Season pile in a tub, got the Definitely No’s out of the way, put the Yesses back in my closet and counted them so that I’d know how many of the Maybes? to bring back.
Well I had more than 14 outfits. 26 to be exact. That is a lot of clothes. A shirt will only make it through rotation once a month? That is more than enough clothes.
(I just thought of Danny Tanner from Full House and his super-organized closet. One time D.J. wanted to borrow a shirt without him knowing so she pulled out the sleeve, looked at the tag and said “Yep, he doesn’t need this one for three more weeks.” Hee!)
This morning I went to Wal-Mart and bought some leggings and today I am going to get rid of the ones from last year that are stretched out. While in the store I considered a hoodie but put it back because I don’t want to get rid of the other exercise jacket I have, because how often do I really need one? Same with not buying the adorable brown dress that would have looked cute in the winter over leggings and a turtleneck or in the spring with flip-flops because I already have a brown dress that I like a bit more. And when I go to Gap and spend the $50 Groupon coupon I will take out an article of clothing for each item I bought, if I even end up buying myself anything after I’ve bought Hubby new shirts.
All of this because I like the way my closet looks now. I like opening it and seeing only clothes that make me really happy.

I hear ya. A couple years ago my closet was jam-packed. I decided that I would not buy any more hangers, and started the one-in-one-out rule. I’ve moved to a bigger closet since then but kept the rule. Not only does it force me to come to terms with getting rid of something I wasn’t ever going to wear again anyway, but it also makes getting dressed so much easier & fun in the morning.
My husband’s a different story all together…
Will you please come help me!???
Janae, if I had as many cute clothes as you I wouldn’t give any away!
