Ever since G was born I’ve tried to eat healthier. I’ve talked about this before. And for the most part my kids do eat pretty healthy. Every day I try to brainwash them into understanding how healthy food makes their tummies feel better and makes their bodies grow big and strong, while sugar makes their tummies hurt. All this hoping that they’ll have a healthy relationship with food and choose fruit over cookies, thereby leaving more sugar for me.
I have done a really good job of indoctrinating G.
A couple of weeks ago I acquiesced and let the kids have chocolate milk one morning. As he waited for me while I stirred the syrup into the milk I reminisced about drinking chocolate milk everyday when I was pregnant with him. He stood aghast and didn’t move. “Mommy, why would you do that? Sugar is not healthy! Why would you do that to your baby?”
Umm…
I brushed him off because I didn’t feel like explaining to him that A) chocolate milk is really not all that bad for you, I just want them to like white milk, and B) their Mommy is just too lazy to make it every morning so I frequently respond “no” to their chocolate milk requests.
Then Saturday G, Little Missy and I ate at the Donut Whole. After about 15 minutes of eating G suddenly realized I was drinking tea with my donuts. “Mommy! Tea has caffeine! You’re not supposed to drink caffeine when you’re pregnant! And look at all the cinnamon on your donuts!”
The child has gone crazy. CUH-RA-ZEE. I explained to him a little bit of caffeine is okay (do I have to go through the recommended amounts with my son, too?), nothing is wrong with cinnamon, and a treat once a day IS NO BIG DEAL.
Hubby gets home from work and I relate all this to him and of course he is proud in the midst of his horror. If he can’t be at home to police what I eat then at least his son is around to do the job for him.

Cinnamon is actually very good for you — can’t remember why, tho’. Erin, don’t overdo it with the scare tactics — you survived, after all.
