We’ve gone to the Augusta pool two times since it opened and both times we’ve gone on the wrong days. Both days were a little too chilly, complete with Little Missy shivering and gritting her teeth as we walked around the pool on our first attempt. But Hubby and the kids love the pool, and it is only June 2nd, so I’m sure we’ll have many more opportunities to hang out in the water when it’s actually hot enough to make the effort of changing everyone into their swimming suits/trunks, making it down to the pool, steering clear of all the loud tweens, showering and dressing and eating and getting the kids in bed by 7 all worth it. I’m sure of it.
Here are my two comments on the pool situation so far:
1. I wish they hadn’t started enforcing the rules on the slide. Last year the kids could slide down by themselves in their inner tubes, or sit on our laps as we went down the slide, but this year they’re not letting either happen. Which I understand, seeing as how they’re trying to keep us safe and all, but still, it’s a bummer.
2. Mothers should not be letting their 14 year old girls wear teeny-tiny bikinis to the pool. I feel sad for these girls, prancing around in immodest clothing, thinking what? That they’re going to get more friends this way? Or entice a boy this way? And then where are they? They have friends and a boyfriend who like them for their bodies. Which—I’m sad to let these girls in on the annoying reality of the situation—but any one of your contemporaries can have that body. With a little nutrition and exercise any of your classmates could look like you, so then where are you? Your shallow friends and boyfriend go to the new girl with the cute body. Why not entice a boy with some interesting conversation? Have more pride in yourself, girlfriend. You’re worth more than simply filling out a string bikini.

Here here, sista!
Dude…the inappropriate swimsuits on teenyboppers. Gets me everytime. However, it is preferred to itty bitty string bikini on ladies my Grandmothers age.
My pool time has consisted of backyard kiddie pool..not too shabby, and I get to make the rules about the slide
Well, we went last Sunday when it was really hot and Alexa still walked around shivering, but she sure didn’t want to leave. I agree about the young girls in ity bity bikinis. Some of them don’t have the body for them and still wear them. Some day (probably soon) I’m going to have to explain that to my two daughters. Like Beth Moore said, you can be cute and still be modest.
I never seemed to have the problem of girls trying to attract me with their cute bodies.
Oh Erin, putting this whole line of reasoning together based on a current trend is totally gratuitous. I have been swim suit shopping this past week–twice–and the current style is string bikinis. I cannot tell you how many stores I went into that did not even have one piece suits. I can recall about ten years ago that the style was the boy shorts and tank top swim suits and that is what all the girls were wearing then. I don’t think fourteen year old girls even have all of the synapses to put together trying to get a boy with a swim suit. And, just for the record, clever conversation would never work with my husband.
If I remember my adolescence correctly, it doesn’t take a truckload of synaptic activity to turn a boy’s head with a skimpy swimsuit.
So…you’re agreeing with me then?
Monica, I totally disagree. At fourteen years old those girls are definitely trying to get noticed by boys. And I don’t know what stores you’re shopping in, but there are plenty of swimsuit options other than string bikinis.
Well, I ended up in JCPenny’s. But The Buckle, Aerie, American Outfitters–you know, the places that fourteen year olds shop–actually did NOT even have full coverage suits. Now, you know I am no fashion icon, so I must have just lived this experience to even have an opinion on the subject. Fourteen year olds are generally not leaders–they are followers. And they are following the fashion trends right now.
I didn’t mean to make a debate out of it. I have just seen one too many string bikinis myself lately.
The current style is string bikini’s? Hmmm, my suit is getting a little ragged…
Okay, I think I’m a little slow adding the comment (not cognitively, I might add!), but I agree with Sami — you CAN be cute AND modest.
Sydney got a little hand me down bathing suit from her cousin–and when I say little, I mean LITTLE! A string bikini for a 5 year old is just plain disgusting in my book. Who makes these things?
