because this is what I’m thinking about right now

in just me, random-ness

Back in April I decided to purge my closet, but it wasn’t until this afternoon that I actually hauled that bag of stuff to Goodwill.  Over the last month it’s been sitting in between my jewelry armoire and closet door, delightfully in the way and constantly reminding me that I’m lazy and need to get to Andover.  But procrastination pays off, because over the weekend my mom gave me the go-ahead to give two bags of my dad’s old Cosby sweaters to Goodwill, too, which means I get the tax write-off!  Woot!  During the initial purging of my closet, when I had that pile of clothes on my bed, I looked at them in all their ugliness and thought “Blah.  No wonder I never wear any of them.”  Because all those clothes were boring!  And not the right kind of boring, not the kind of boring that I am, with a closet filled full of neutrals: the right kind of charcoals and smoky blues and browns.  No, those giveaways were just boring.  But sometimes I look at my closet, awash in soothing and never-have-to-think-about-it neutrals, and I think that maybe I shouldn’t always dress so morosely.  A few days after initially having that thought Goodwill had their $1.10 sale.  So the kids and I showed up five minutes after the store opened, parked in one of the two spots that remained open, and began the search for adorable but cheap dresses.  I took nine dresses to the dressing room, tried on eight, and bought four.  It would have been nice to look at pants, but apparently bargain shoppers don’t like giggling kids, so me and my crew were out of there.  And now I have some clothes with color!  Red and plaid and tiny flowers.  Those aren’t all on one article of clothing.  I didn’t go crazy with the sale.  My going out on a limb is tempered with frugality.  I’m not going to spend $25 on a madras plaid sheath.  No, if I’m spending that much on a dress then I’ll stick with what I know, which is a charcoal A-line dress from Target.

Who would have guessed that someone with such an awesome and colorful blog background would opt for neutral clothing? I think I’ve commented before on how much I adore your blog background. I would seriously wear it. Okay, I would wear a shirt *like* it.

I always try to shop Goodwill or garage sales first. DAV is good, too, but for some reason those Salvation Army stores always stink. What’s up with that? I find some great clothes there when I can’t find anything I like at the mall. Some of those clothes are even in neutral colors.
