stop pooping in my house already

We have had this dog since January and Max continues to poop in my house every few days.  WHY??????

He doesn’t ever poop in the same place, so it’s not that he smells an old spot and thinks that’s where he should go.

The rescue from which we adopted him said that maybe we’re crating him too much and he’s pooping out of spite.  So yesterday I let him stay out of his crate while we took a nap and he pooped on a blanket.  Apparently he still has to be crated while we’re asleep.

This morning we let him out of his crate when we woke up, took him outside where he did his business, then he came back in.  Thirty minutes later he pooped on G’s floor.

When he poops I bring him to the spot, put his nose right next to it, say “NO NO, MAX,” then take him outside so that he’ll do his business out there.  BUT HE JUST POOPED INSIDE, so obviously he doesn’t need to poop again outside.

Most of the time I really like the dog.  He just follows me around and sits at my feet and lets my kids love on him.  Yesterday afternoon Max and I hung out on the porch while the kids played in the yard and it was so Norman-Rockwell-fun.  Why can’t he be a good dog all the time?

Internet, I’m looking for help here.  Why do other people not have the house-training issues that I am having?  Suggestions?

I am sorry Erin. We have the same problem with our dog. He is a 6yr old Lab and the very first thing he did in our new house was poop in the hallway. He became an outside dog about 4&1/2 years ago. We thought we would give it a try and let him come inside in our new house….no such luck. With four kids I just don’t have time to pick up poop from the dog. I feel bad about it, but that is what works for our family.

Pugs are meant to be outdoor dogs. They just love the sun and fresh air. Just put him outside with a doghouse and throw some food and drink his way, and forget him. They are aslo really resistant to cold weather. Trust me. :)

I’m no help either. As you know, our doggies are outside too. Hopefully someone out there has a helpful hint! :)

Interesting the mcfeely says pugs are outdoor dogs and your rescue people say never leave them out. Hmmmm….

Well, the rescue people are full of crap as far as not putting the dog outside. However, she cannot put him outside because he gets out of the fence. I think your problems would be solved if you could leave him outside most of the time. My dog is an outside dog, and coming in is a once in a while treat. My dog comes in if it is cold outside, or if he just had a bath, or if I am in an exceptionally good mood. So, maybe you could try the electric fence or shock collar and try leaving him outside for a while. Certainly now while the weather is nice.

Maybe he likes having his nose rubbed in it and that’s why he keeps doing it. Try making him watch while you run your own nose in it for a while and see if that changes anything.

Once upon a time, we had a similar problem. Our dog, after 5 years living with us, suddenly started peeing in the house at night. The vet did a thorough check and determined it was a behavior problem. We tried kenneling him at night; he peed in the kennel. We tried shutting him in the bathroom; he peed on the bathroom floor. We couldn’t keep him outside; he barked nonstop. Guess what? We drove the dog 200 miles to the nearest basset hound rescue and paid them $100 to take him. It was sad, but he was quickly adopted by some sweet people who had a pet door. And now he’s living happily ever after and so are we.
