I stumbled upon this article about the benefits of drinking raw, unpasteurized milk.  My first thought was No Way but after reading the article the thought of drinking regular store-bought milk sickens me.

Have you guys had raw, unpasteurized milk?  What do you think about it?

Milk is a staple in Little Missy’s diet.  I may have to switch.

Now why did you bring that to my attention? Unpasturized milk grosses me out, but now so does pasturized milk. You’ll have to let me know what you decide.

I haven’t, though husband has a co-worker who owns a dairy farm and does so. She’s offered us some, but the logistics (there is no refrigerator at work, for one thing) have made it too inconvenient.

I am, however, greatly amused that she drinks raw milk, yet is freaked out by the idea of eating (non-raw) duck eggs, even in baked goods.

We only drink Braum’s milk which is rBGH-free. All the milk comes from the Braum’s farm in OK which grows their own feed for the cattle and uses manure from the cattle for fertilizer. It tastes better and is cheaper, too. It’s probably the most natural milk you are going to find unless you get raw milk straight from a farmer who doesn’t use pesticides or chemical fertilizers.

…and I don’t think you would find a farmer locally that does not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers. It is just not practical.

When I grew up in Augusta, we drank fresh farm milk also. Only for about a year.
I think at the time it was cheaper. And there were two growing and very active teenagers drinking about a gallon of milk every two days.
Plus, we enjoyed making our own butter.
I think that was during the time we also had “Herman”.

When my kids were younger and we lived in Wichita, I used to drive out to Whitewater every week to pick up raw milk, fresh from the farm. It started with me looking for a place to buy fresh goat milk for Joshua (now 14!) when it was time for him to be weaned. Goat milk is easier to digest than cow milk. Through the Sedgwick County Extension Office, we found this family who was willing to sell us fresh goat milk and it just so happened that they had raw cow milk and farm fresh eggs they would sell us also. I never drank the goat milk (that was for the baby), but I did enjoy that fresh cow milk. There is nothing like raw milk to elevate a bowl of plain ol’ cornflakes. Since dh didn’t like the heavy cream on top, I would always skim it off and save it for my coffee or pouring on top of sliced strawberries. That there is pure heaven!

I was so sad when the milk was suddenly no longer available. I think there may have been some legalities about selling the milk that forced them to stop. It was just a family with a couple of cows and more milk than their family could use, but they were very meticulous about keeping bottles and equipment sterile. It was also like a little weekly field trip for the kids to go out and pick up the milk and see all the animals.

I grew up on a farm with pigs, cows, horses, but I’ve never had raw milk that I can remember. I’m feeling deprived! I have heard that Brahm’s milk tastes better than all the others…
