I will not be deterred, no matter how many taunts you throw at me.

in hubby, random-ness

A few months ago Hubby’s long-time and rarely-seen friend Corey came to visit.  Hubby has known Corey since kindergarten but we rarely see Corey because Corey always lives in another state.  Well now Corey lives in the same state and – wouldn’t you know it! – very nearly lives in the same town.  And up until a few months ago we still saw Corey as often as if he lived in another state.  As of late we’ve been seeing Corey more often because I am cutting his hair every once in a while and he has a girlfriend who is great fun to be with.  We all know that girls keep in touch better than boys so if Catherine and I have anything to do with it the four of us will be seeing eachother more than once a year.

So anyway, one night Hubby saw Corey and Corey loaned Hubby a wonderful boy present: the first season of Battlestar Galactica.  I say “boy present” because what girl is going to watch a science fiction series made by the Sci-Fi Channel.  The Sci-Fi Channel not even being a respected cable channel like AMC or HBO or FX.  The answer is this girl.  That is because I love Hubby and he was strangely excited to watch it and let’s face it, we don’t have a lot to watch on TV since we don’t have cable.  Plus, a few years ago I read Ender’s Game and it was kind of interesting.

We sat down to watch it and it was okay.  Then it slowly got better.  And when that first mini-series ended I was like “PUT IN THE NEXT DISC!”  Because Battlestar Galactica is a fantastic show.  What I like most is that the characters are not pigeon-holed into behaving one way.  Each character changes and responds to the story and it all seems so real.  Every one of you should rent the series from Netflix.  And then you can all write me and tell me how much you love it and how your life will never be the same and how you give all the credit to me.  To which I will say thank you and it was nothing.

Sis and Todd-in-law have great taste in TV shows so I excitedly told them all about Battlestar.  And they sweetly listened, but I could tell in their eyes that they were hoping I’d stop talking about it so we could move on to discussing worthwhile television like Flight of the Conchords or Pushing Daisies.  But I wouldn’t let it go and I forced them to take home the first season of Battlestar, because by that time Hubby and I were on Season 3 (I think).  A few weeks ago I got a calm-but-panicked phone call from Todd.  He and Sis needed season two and did we have it?  Todd was contemplating buying it.  Spending lots of money on a boxed set of season two because they couldn’t wait a few days for Netflix to ship it to them.  Only someone who has seen Battlestar will understand why he wasn’t off his rocker but kind of made sense.  It is that important.

Saturday night I had some friends over to celebrate my birthday.  I made Hubby call Corey and ask him to please please please bring over season 3 for us and season 2 for Sis and Todd.  If he didn’t want to he didn’t have to, but please please please because we need it.  And like any good friend with a good drug to share he happily brought them over for us.  And Sis and I did a little dance.

My friend Amanda saw the set laying in the kitchen and she exclaimed “You watch it, too?”  So then I got to talk about it with her.  My friend Lily also said that her husband Dave watches it and wanted to talk with me about it when I was visiting them in KC but didn’t have the chance.  It’s like a little society of normal people who are so happy to find other normal people who love the show, too.  Mostly because we are not weirdoes who go to BG conventions.  Although I would if there were one close.

Right now Hubby and I are on Season 3, episode 7.  We have the rest of Season 3, then the first part of Season 4, then we’ll be caught up to everyone else when the final season airs soon.  You can bet there will be crying and gnashing of teeth when we all find out Adama is a cylon.

Ah, I love the Ender books. I own them all if you want to read them, although I think they are packed away in the attic. Orson Scott Card was my original favorite author, although now it’s a toss up between him and Dostoyevsky.
