When we lived in Tulsa we had to drive across a big lake (Keystone Lake, I think) on our way to Wichita. Once G was born I panicked every time I drove over the lake. I’d move to the middle lane, slow down or speed up to get away from other cars, and always go over the escape plan in case our car ended up in the water.
I can’t remember if my mom knew this or if it was her fear, too, but one year for Christmas she bought Hubby and I little plastic hammers that would break glass in case our car went under water.
A few weeks ago Hubby and I were looking around our house for items that we no longer use. A Christmas party was in a day or two and we were supposed to bring a white elephant gift. He pulled one of the little plastic hammers from our kitchen junk drawer.
“Hubby,” I said, “we are keeping those.”
“They’re definitely necessary in case our KITCHEN EVER GOES UNDER WATER.”

lol. That bridge freaks me out a little, too – especially back a year or two ago when the water was up high.
Oh, this is like my worst fear realized. When we were in Chicago over XMas, we had crazy rain, and we saw a white car slide right into the Des Plaines River and start to sink. Luckily, the people inside had the wherewithal to open windows ASAP and get out safe. Seriously, though, with 2 kids in car seats, it makes me sick to my stomach to think about it! I think we need to invest in some plastic hammers!
OMG! If your kitchen filled with water, HOW WOULD YOU GET OUT OF YOUR SEATBELTS!?!?
Those little plastic hammers also have a cutting tool to get out of the seatbelts. No worries!
Well in that case, can you get us a couple?
I want one too…not that I would think fast enough in an emergency to remember that I had one!
If you’re serious, I’ll actually look for the catalog.
Or just post the link. I drive over a creek or a river every time I leave my house. The first snow we had this season really freaked me out driving over the bridges. I never thought about it before, but now I would have two kids to slice out of their seats.
I had the same fear! I used to visualize the “positive outcome” by picturing myself having superhuman strength, making headlines the next day by saving my two babies with my bare hands…
