boots

in just me

Hubby’s parents are taking the family skiing this winter.  My mother, who wears two jackets when it’s 60 degrees outside and admonishes me for letting my kids not wear their winters coat in said weather, offered to buy me snow boots for the trip.  At first I didn’t really think I needed them.  But over the past few snowy and frigid days, as I have been wearing my cowboy boots that have no traction and no insulation in the soles, I have realized that I do need some.  So the internet hunt began.

This is what I want: boots I can wear in the snow or just plain cold weather, that I can wear without socks if I have to, and that I can possibly wear with a skirt.  (That last stipulation isn’t necessary, just would be nice.)  So that leads me to Uggs, right?  But with Uggs I think of Jessica Simpson from four years ago, and I just don’t want to go there.

So I hunted on LL Bean, Northface, Zappos, Eddie Bauer.  The ones I liked best were Uggs or Ugg look-alikes.  My sister-in-law has some Uggs and they always look cute on her.  And Thandie Newton wore some in “Run, Fatboy, Run” and she looked cute as well.

I wonder if Uggs are like capri pants.  When they came in style a few years ago my sister and I vowed not to buy them because they were so trendy.  But then they moved past trendy and into a staple of the wardrobe.  Is it the same with Uggs?  Do I pony up all that money for some winter boots?

Last time I asked you friends for advice you gave me none.  NONE.  Shame on you.  So this time, tell me what winter shoes you’re wearing.  I need some help.

I am wearing LLBean clogs for freezing cold, up to two inches of snow, out and about shoes. They are warm, water proof, pretty cute with jeans, but pretty useless in a real snow storm. I am in the market for blizzard boots. I think I am going the $12 Wal-Mart route there. For one, you cannot even see your boots in a blizzard.

Capri pants are a staple like black pants and cute bags. Uggs are a brand name that will always be associated with Jessica Simpson four years ago. I would go with something more grown up like LLBean or Eddie Bauer. The twelve year old that sits in front of us in church wears Uggs. They are crazy cute. On her.

Well, I disagree. I have worn Ugg-like boots the past few winters, and I don’t know if I will ever change that- I am addicted. They are super comfy, super warm, and very versatile. If you wear them under your jean leg, they pretty much function like any other boot/shoe. You can go the skinny jean tucked in route, which I think you could totally pull off and still look your age. I also think, in the right type of situation, they could look very cute with a skirt. I think the Ugg boot is your answer. Caveat- they vary quite a bit by price and I think you get what you pay for. For an “in between”, Bear Paw brand is nice. Or you could bit the bullet and invest in the Ugg moniker! ;) I wish I could tell you what they were like, but I have yet to own a “real” pair!

okay… i just bought a really cute pair of boots today at tjmaxx for $32 (were $70 boots)… they are kind of ugg looking, but they’re sketchers… and i think they’ll look absolutely adorable with skirts and jeans alike… you should check them out… they still had a lot left.

I don’t think I”m the best judge of fashion… I’m wearing aerobic shoes right now (the running shoes let the breeze in…brrr!). I haven’t gotten any winter boots yet. and it took me a few years before I started buying capris :)

Oh, girlfriend. You are way cuter than Jessica Simpson and if you started wearing uggs people would start to associate them with you! “Every time I think of uggs, I think of Erin! They’re so cute on her!!!” LOL

Haha – Erin, you crack me up! I love my cowboy boots too, and down here the weather is warmer but the no traction thing is definitely a problem. I have a pair of riding boots that I like. I have to admit that I was never a big fan of Uggs, but they have kind of grown on me. I still doubt that I will ever own a pair because they remind me too much of the girls at my Alma Mater that would wear them with mini skirts ( I was never a Jessica Simpson fan so I must have missed that phase for her). However, I think you can pull them off for sure. I think they have some cute styles these days that are different than the typical Uggs everyone remembers. However, I think another cute option would be shearling lined wellies from J Crew – definitely warm and waterproof. I got Gina some unlined ones for her bday, and she loves them but lined would probably be even warmer. I have seen them onsale on J Crew’s website, but there are usually a few on ebay too!

As Jess said I do love my waterproof wellies but not so great with a skirt I bought some baker boots with fur last year (very warm and cute) and I have rocket dog boots (ugg look alikes) also very warm! I think Macy’s and Dillards always has a good selection of these type of boots!! Good luck!

Well, when I have to be outside for long in this weather, I wear two pairs of SmartWool socks and an old pair of hiking boots. Slightly warmer weather and I can wear my two pairs of SmartWools with my rubber boots. I wouldn’t wear either of these options with a skirt or off our 47 acres (unless I was camping, and then still no skirt). Cowboy boots or tennis shoes are what I usually wear into town. If I had the extra cash, I’d buy some Uggs, and I’m not the trendy type. I’m definitely not the Jessica Simpson type. I think Uggs may transcend trendy. They’re cute and comfy, but they’re also a little spendy.

Okay, I’ve picked out my favorites: the Sundance Limited Edition boots. Only $350! Such a deal! LOL! I can think of so many other things to spend $350 on.
